Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential -sturdy walking shoes or light hiking boots for game drives and any walking safaris, plus a pair of sandals for relaxing at camp.

- Binoculars -genuinely worth packing your own rather than relying on a shared pair
- Camera with a zoom lens, plus extra batteries and memory cards (charging outlets can be limited at remote camps)
- A dust-proof bag or cover for electronics – safari roads are dusty, especially in the dry season
- A basic daypack for game drives
Health & Comfort Essentials
- High-SPF sunscreen and sunglasses
- Insect repellent, particularly for evenings
- A basic personal first-aid kit and any personal medication
- Reusable water bottle
What to Leave at Home
- Camouflage-patterned clothing – in several African countries, camouflage is restricted to military use and can cause issues at customs or with local authorities
- Excess luggage -hard-sided suitcases are impractical for bush flights; stick to a soft duffel bag
